About NORCs and the Fresh Meadows Senior Program
New York City recognizes several communities, including Fresh Meadows, as a NORC, a Naturally Occurring Retirement Community. A NORC is a housing development where older residents are a substantial proportion of the households as a result of their aging-in-place. The NYC Department for the Aging has created public/private partnerships to bring supportive services to all seniors ages 60 or older, living in a NORC.
In Fresh Meadows, NORC services are provided by the Senior Program located in the basement of the 6700 building (6700 192nd St.) This program is overseen by the not-for-profit organization Selfhelp Community Services, Inc., that seeks to “maintain the independence and dignity of seniors.”
Recently, the FMTA tweeted about the Senior Program’s new, limited-time free medical transportation and free housekeeping program at . This blog will also be highlighting noteworthy Senior Program events as they occur.
